Song of Solomon

2023 160×120 cm

Not only in the Bible, but already in the ancient Orient and especially in Egypt, love poetry was widespread and also shaped the “Song of Songs”, as part of the Old Testament. The pyramids in the background and the many fertility symbols from different cultures point to the universality of the theme. People from all over the world flock and gather around an oasis as if to share in the happiness and lust of the lovers. After all, don't we all long for it? In addition to bursting life, there are numerous symbols of death and decay. It's all part of life. “Seize the day” and “Remember that you are dying.” We don't have to wait for paradise in the afterlife; the paradise of lustful life can also be found on earth.

The Tower of Babel

2024 100×140 cm

A peaceful throng of people from all corners of the world gathers beneath two towers in a barren landscape. The tower on the left is complete. The diversity of the people is also reflected in the various building elements. A stable and harmonious whole has been created from a wide variety of eras and architectural styles. The top of the tower reaches up into the clouds. These glow in eerie shades of red and orange, as if a conflagration were approaching. The tower in the foreground appears to be even more gigantic. Is it finished or still under construction? This image refers to the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. At that time, the people spared from the Flood built a gigantic tower, on which they wanted to save themselves if another flood were to be sent by God as punishment. God punished them for their quest for godliness with a “Babylonian confusion of tongues” and scattered them across the earth. The people in this picture are also building giant towers. Are they also meant to be a refuge from the increasingly threatened and threatening environment? But is this the right way? Can we really save ourselves and the world this way? Won't we end up punishing and destroying ourselves if we hold on to our belief in technological progress and constant growth? We have to decide!

Noah's

2022 140×100 cm

The world is coming to an end; ominous clouds are gathering. The water floods the entire area, already reaching up to the ankles. On a hill, a building assembled from all sorts of scrap metal, obviously a nightclub, rises out of the water. An inviting light shines inside, and somewhere a strong fire burns, promising warmth. In a long queue whose end is not foreseeable, beings half man and half animal line up and want to get in there. Why this masquerade? Is there a costume party going on? Or is it a modern Noah's Ark in which those gathered seek refuge from the forces of nature? Have they dressed up so elaborately because only one pair of the same kind is allowed into this ark at a time? The two bouncers are certainly difficult to get past. It is probably human nature in the face of existentially threatening problems to develop special creativity but also to take refuge in egoism and hedonism.

Fortress Europe

2025 100 × 140 cm

We find ourselves in front of a gigantic wall made up of fragments of different architectural styles. Countless billboards compete for our attention, promising various pleasures. People from different cultures and regions are standing in front of the wall. Most of them are engaged in peaceful activities or seem to be waiting for something. What are they waiting for? To be let into the fenced-off area? The only visible entrance is bricked up. Armed guards patrol in front of it and make it unmistakably clear: you must stay outside! Some people no longer want to be excluded and try risky ways to gain access to the supposed paradise. Currently in human history, we must decide how we will use and distribute the world's resources. Only then can the Earth once again become a livable place for all of us.

Five to twelve

Where should one look? The eye wants to linger on the peaceful idyll on the right side of the picture. But it is impossible to ignore the other half of the picture. The twilight of our affluent apocalypse. It's hard to believe that the people in the picture don't notice what is coming their way and is already so close. But isn't that what we do every day? We must look and act. It's five minutes to midnight!
